5 Leadership Habits That Set Great Managers Apart

Great leaders are not born — they are made through consistent habits and deliberate practice. Across years of working with emerging professionals across Africa, one truth stands out: the managers who rise are the ones who repeat small, high-leverage behaviours until they become second nature.

1. Make yourself available

Successful leaders make a habit of being visible and available. It is easy to hide behind closed doors and let the daily grind swallow your calendar, but leaders who deliberately keep open channels — regular check-ins, honest 1-on-1s, and an open-door policy — build the trust that makes everything else easier.

2. Practise what you preach

If you want your team to perform at their best, show them what the best looks like. Great managers live out their character and values daily. They are authentic, consistent, and lead by example — not just by authority.

3. Ask before you answer

Most managers default to giving advice. The most effective leaders flip the script: they ask better questions. Simple, powerful questions like “What’s on your mind?” and “And what else?” shift the team from dependence to ownership, and turn managers into coaches.

4. Recognise people for their worth

The top reason talented people leave jobs is that they don’t feel recognised. Most people receive very little feedback — positive or otherwise. A habit as small as acknowledging a job well done, publicly and specifically, drives engagement and retention more than any bonus.

5. Encourage others to voice their opinions

Too often leaders think they need to do all the talking and all the fixing. Great managers understand they gain far more respect — and a far wider range of good ideas — when they let others speak. Collaboration, not control, is the mark of modern leadership.

Consistency is key: a habit is a behaviour repeated regularly, and successful leadership is no different. Start with one habit this week, and build from there.
